Nazov Skoly Money matters Project English conversation year: 2007/2008 Meno Trieda Money matters I would like to start this essay with question. Can wealth bring us happiness? Well, this is pretty disputable question. Personally I do not think that only wealth makes us happy. Humans are social beings thus we need friends, relatives, family, children… etc. If we can not keep in touch with our relatives and friends the money is useless for us. But people who have lots of money usually have family and friends. For me money means nothing. Although the things I can buy for money are pretty important I think that there are much more important things in life. People are usually happy when they get new clothes or new mobile phone. They often forget that things make them happy only because they have got someone to share the happiness with. Whether we like it or not money are very important for us. I can not imagine life without money because I can not imagine hungriness or the feeling of having not enough. However, money provides us with comfort but without social interactions we can not have completely satiable life. Nowadays’ trend makes it hard to earn a lot of money because the cost of living incredibly expensive. For most people its luxury to be able to afford to feed they’re own children. Despite the trend there are still couple of methods how to get rich. The most common way of getting rich is just to have luck. Everyone’s life is all about luck and misery. The lucky one’s are born in rich families and have enough money to live well through their life. On the other hand there are people who were born into alcoholic families or to homeless people. The life isn’t fair. You have to take care of yourself otherwise you become a homeless. However there is still chance for those who did not have luck. The chance is called university. Most people who studied on university earn enough money to be well-off. Although you study on university there is no guarantee that you become rich. You still have to work hard and keep on trying. I do not think that there is an easy way of getting rich. Sometimes you have luck and you get to judge big company and get a lot of money. But this does not happen very often. Gambling is also one of the ways how to get rich. But again you have to have luck otherwise you become beggar. Some people believe that gambling will bring them money and because of this vision they lose all the money they have. I do not want to get addicted to gambling because in my opinion it is terrible addiction. It is all about win everything or lose everything. I would like to win but the risk is too high. I think that the risk is not worth of trying. It do not matter how you gamble. Whether you play slot machines, poker or black jack the principle is still the same. You might have good luck and you win or you might have bad luck and you lose. People are insane and often do not think about the consequences when they have vision of becoming rich. Many people try to get some money by betting in lotteries. They buy ticket for a few crowns and they hope that they will win lots of money. When they are buying the ticket they think about becoming rich or about what they would do with the money if they have won but they do not bear on mind that the chance of winning national lottery is smaller than being hit by a thunder. I think that there is chance to get rich for everyone. But the chance is neither gambling nor hoping to win in a lottery. It is not doing job either. Most of the jobs only provide necessary money for living. You have to be active and try to use every opportunity of getting rich. People who do not try to make money very often become beggars. Every time I see a beggar I think about the reasons why is he living on the street. It might just have been bad luck, drugs or maybe family problems. You never know why people have to live on the streets until you ask them. There are so many opportunities how to become homeless. Sometimes it is enough to make one wrong decision and you spoil the rest of your life… Always bear on mind that this might happen to you as well as it happened to many other homeless people before you. It is hard to make money but it is very easy to lose them. To lose money is as easy as to lose a flat because without money you can not afford flat. Some beggars deserve to live on a street because they did not study very well or they were just lazy to work. On the other hand there are people like you on the streets. Try to imagine that you lose your job because your boss does not like and then you have not got money to pay for your flat. After you become a beggar you hardly get any job because no one wants to employ homeless people. Beggars have always been a part of our society. Since the times when people started to trade there were beggars. It is thought that first transactions took place 100.000 before present. But it was about 12000-10000 years B.C. when people started to trade. Instead of each tribe hunting and gathering their food, different person within each tribe became expert at a certain task such as hunting, gathering, cooking, tool making, shelter making, or clothes making. It is thought that the Mesopotamians made first advent of market system about 6.000 years B.C. The bartering system was not so good because if someone wanted to sell goods but did not want goods of other salesman the trade could not take place. The demands of growing business and trade caused a lot of problems so the money system had to be developed. 2.000 B.C. in ancient Iraq people started to use silver rings and bars. Other civilization also used pseudo-money. Examples range from seashells, to tobacco leaves, to large round rocks, to beads. The first pseudo-money were seashells. Market system and currencies has been developing for thousands of years. The results of this development are hundreds of different currencies worldwide. Because of the countries have not been developing as one complex state most of them have developed their own currency. In most cases, each country has monopoly control over the supply and production of its own currency. If not the control is done either by Ministry of Finance or by central bank. The exceptions are United states of America, European Union, Great Britain… etc. Countries in these unions have agreed that they will use the same currency. There are not only different currencies in different countries you could use different currencies in the same country. For example in casinos you use casino’s currency. Even coupons are currency. Because of there is so many currencies there has to be currency which would be used for international trades. There are a couple of currencies which are important worldwide. Although about 40 to 60 percent of trade is done in united state dollar the euro is becoming more popular because most of the Europe uses it. Other worldwide preferred currencies are pounds and japans yens. The Euro is going to be used in Slovak Republic as well. Even though I am looking forward to use euro I am not sure if our economy is prepared for it. Everything will be much more expensive but the wages probably will not go up much. International trades will be much easier because there will be no need to exchange currencies. The trade will be faster what means that trades-men will earn more money. And that is the point, to earn more…
