Neurčitý člen a/an používame, keď o niečom hovoríme prvýkrát a naopak určitý člen the používame, keď o niečom hovoríme znova:
I bought a CD player and a TV yesterday. The CD player was cheap, but the TV was expensive.
I have a dog and a cat. The dog is black and the cat is white.
Určitý člen the používame:
- keď je niečo len jedno the sun, the queen, the earth
len "jedno" sa nemyslí len jedno na svete, ale aj jedno konkrétne a obaja, hovoriaci aj počúvajúci, vedia, o ktoré sa jedná:
May I turn on the radio?
Peter is in the bathroom.
I am going to clean the car tomorrow.
I must go to the post office.
(vo všetkých príkladoch vieme, o ktorú konkrétnu vec sa jedná)

Členy v jednotnom a množnom čísle, s počítateľnými a nepočítateľnými podstatnými menami:
Neurčitý člen a/an používame len s počítateľným podstatnými menami v jednotnom čísle. Nesmieme ich používať s nepočítateľnými podstatnými menami alebo v množnom čísle.
She is reading a letter.
This is an interesting place.
Určitý člen the môžeme používať aj s počítateľnými aj nepočítateľnými podstatnými menami, aj v jednotnom aj v množnom čísle.

The water is in the fridge.
Pokiaľ však hovoríme o veciach vo všeobecnosti tak nepoužívame žiadny člen:
I like flowers.
I think education is very important.
Žiadne členy takisto nepoužívame pred názvami krajín, miest, ulíc, staníc, letísk a pod.
I live in London.
She comes from England.
